"Light my Fire" 32km Individual Road Race

On Sunday 10th March 28 riders set out in the drizzle in A, B and C grades plus a group of 5 social riders to tackle a 32km ride from Giles Park to the top of “the cutting” and back. There was no wind, although there were rumours of some at the rear of the large peleton which formed on Chapman Valley Rd.  A grade caught B grade riders and together they caught C grade riders near Fig Tree Crossing, just as the big climb loomed large.  Who would survive and light their fire in such damp conditions?

Out of the murky haze a peleton of 11 emerged in the final stretch after just 50 minutes of riding.  Could Jonty steal another early win?  Nearly.  He was 4th behind a new champion, Sybrand Cillies who secured his first win at Spokes.  Closely following was a fast Jarrod Bell, recovering from a broken collar bone.  Then Andrew Blake, Jonty Calder, Alex, Godley, Peter Johnson, Tom Thuijs and Reg (I’m not A grade) Salmon along with Sara Armitage, the first woman.  All were given a time of 52min 21sec, an average of 37.25KPH!!!  Darryl Sheilds was only 30 seconds back.  Mark Hollander and Kylee Crabb were next, only 4 minutes behind.  Kylee was awarded a special “fire starter”  prize by Barbara Glenister, our event sponsor.  Other “fire starter” awardees were Sybrand Cillie for his overall win, Ben Harris for reaching hair raising speeds and Marisa Gilles for a gutsy overall ride.

C grade riders came across the finish lines in small groups sprinting for line honours in their groups.  Despite the damp conditions the event was hotly contested and thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.

This ride was great preparation for Spoke’s next event on Sunday 24th March, an Individual Road Race from Nabawa to Northampton return.  This 47km Blue Ribbon Event is along an undulating course.  All levels of cyclists are encouraged to ride, signing on at the Chapman Valley Recreation Centre at 7.30am.

Waggrakine Individual 2/3 lap Event.

Sunday 24th Feb.

Two or three laps of the 8.6 km Cooper Road circuit in Waggrakine was all the choice that Spokes Cycle Club riders had to make for the individual road race held on Sunday 24 February.

Sponsored by Pawz-4-Thought Home & Pet Minding and with a cold, blustery south easterly wind blowing, 30 riders headed off at 8 a.m. in what was to prove a ‘character building’ event.

The pace was on from the start for the more accomplished riders & some very competitive riding was displayed with Hagan Keating, Jonty Clader, Darryl Sheilds and Max Nowajee being the lead bunch through the first lap in less than 15 minutes. Paul Hearne was expected to dominate the race but had a puncture very early on & his chances of finishing up the front were over. However he still gave a very impressive display of power riding once he was back on the road.

Alex Godley, Mike Reymond, Dean Carroll, Reg Salmon, Tim Glenister, John Tamm, Mark Hollander, John Andrews and Kylie Crabbe were also a hard riding bunch that found the conditions and hills trying and by the third lap had split into smaller groups.

The lead bunch worked and raced together really well with Jonty Calder winning a sprint finish from Nowajee and Keating in a time of 44 minutes 23 seconds with a average speed of 35.5kph.

Rhonda Bradley, Mitchell Crabbe Barb Glenister, recovering from injury Julie Firth, and first time rider Marissa Gillies, also completed 3 laps in times just above or below the 1 hour time proving that riding is as much about testing yourself as much as it is about beating some one else.

Sherry Obrien & Markku Laine (also first time riders) hammered them selves for one lap and Sarah Armitage was the first to finish in the 2 lap category with a time of 32 minutes and an average speed of 32.8 kph. She was a convincing winner in front of Simon Fenby and Brad Ewings who were only seconds apart.

Club stalwart and publicity officer Jennie Haste showed good form returning from injury to finish in front of the improving Julie Wilton and relatively new rider Ros Ewing. Neal Robson proved to all that if he had made the 8 am starting time that he would have finished well up in the field instead of giving everyone a 5 minute handicap.

Morning smoko of slice and cake and water melon was enjoyed by all in the aftermath and a discussion on rehabilitation of the club bike trailer also ensured.

Spokes’ woman champion Julie Firth commented that she was really looking forward to the anticipated challenges with Sarah Armitage and the rapidly improving Kylie Crabbe in future events as everyone’s fitness improves.

Life Member Darryl Sheilds was also heard to state that there are a number of riders in his sights as he continues to improve his fitness and reduce his weight. BRING IT ON BIG FELLA!!!

Spokes Cycle Club and Dragon Fly Media will present the Barb Glenister sponsored ‘Light My Fire’ event of 32 kms starting 8 am Giles Park Moonyoonooka Sunday 10 March 2013.

Second Partner Time Trial 2013
Sunday 08:00 10 February 2013 Waggrakine
Summary Report

Firstly, a big thanks to our sponsor of today’s event - DRYLANDS PERMACULTURE – for all your gardening advice see Julie Firth. Thanks also to our major sponsor DRAGONFLY MEDIA for their fantastic support throughout the year. Our sponsors are helping to keep down our membership costs.
What a great turn out in such high temperatures, 39 riders - our best result so far for this year. A special big welcome to our nine first time partners; Markka Laine, Karin Van Dongen, Anthony and Leanne Liddell, Kylie and Mitchell Crabb, Dean Carroll, Brad Ewing and Dave Grace. The presence of ultra marathon rider Robbie Place and local cycling luminaries Jason Potts and Richard Correy added to the quality of the field.
First off on the 17.2 Km ride was Barbara Glenister with Markka and Karin. Unfortunately Markka had to retire with a flat tyre and Barbara brought Karin home under strong verbal encouragement that could be heard from Halls Rd! First to finish the first lap were Simon Fenby and Dean Carroll with a strong and smooth rhythm. Darryl Sheilds was again wearing his mentoring hat, this time with Dave Grace who was participating in his first event. To their credit they finished a very credible seventh place which we are sure Dave will be very chuffed about. Unfortunately Ian Andrews and Jennie Haste discovered they had to adjust a wheel that was rubbing on the forks and Kylie Crabb’s GPS fell off and their race hopes faded. Hagan Keating and Tim Glenister’s regular training together paid off with an impressive time of under 30 mins to take 5th place. The large field of riders masked the fine efforts and close results of many others riders such as Tom Davis & Paul Mathews (3rd place), John Tamm & Tom Thuijs (6th place), Reg Salmon & Mark Hollander (8th place), Neal Robson & Julie Firth (9th place)
Andre & Kellie Eastough and Mort Haslett & Max Nowrojee were riding together again but couldn’t beat their previous time; however riding with new partner saw improved times from Reggie Richardson, Jean Thompson, Simon Fenby, Mark Hollander and Paul Mathews. The Eastough and Liddell teams both made the race a comfortable family event.
However all credit goes to Robbie Place and Richard Correy for their flawless ride for first place in a stunning time of 26 min and 59 secs (average speed of over 39Km/hr). Jonty Calder and Jason Potts came in second place just 43 seconds later. Jonty’s race performance and talent continues to improve with each meeting.
Thanks again goes to our organising staff Jarrod Bell (time keeping), Barbara Glenister (for helping our new event coordinator) and Rhonda Bradley for traffic management.
Our next event is on the 24 February over the same course but it will be an individual time trial over 2 or 3 circuits. There will be a mass start rather than handicap starts. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Australia Day Criterium

B grade blog.

Emma welcome to spokes and thank you to Reggie for encouraging her around our crit. course.  Emma should be very proud not to have been lapped by the teeth gnashing competition today.
Much of the race was led by Rhonda, Kylee, Jean and to begin with Mitchell our youngest junior. But the competition was fierce and the umbilical cord was truly severed when Mum, Kylee left her son behind and didn't look back.  Undeterred Mitchell still put in a gallant effort finishing fourth.  First, second and third: Rhonda Bradley, Kylee Crabb and Jean Thompson respectively.

A Grade Blog.

A great turn out and everyone completed the race.
Someone had to be the first to be lapped and that honorary position went to one of our new members, Simon.  There were many that followed Simon's example, but to save me writing a 'lapped list', refer to the results which will give you a very rough idea of when lapping occurred the first time round.  There was a lot of lapping.
Andre was sighted out the front for most of the race.  A bit of swapping places went on between Jonty, Sybrend and Peter.  This is Sybrend's first race with us, talent to be watched, welcome to Spokes.  Jonty had not only youth on his side but also the psychological advantage of fluorescent pink socks...Who is coaching him?  I do think they would have looked even more spectacular with Reg's racing sandals... but I am a pom.  I can feel a dress up ride coming on....
Sorry I digress, back to the race. First to fourth: Andre Eastough, Jonty Calder, Sybrend Gillie and Peter Johnson.  I heard it said that Peter's age added up to the total of the other three riders, a fine example of the heights you can reach with years of dedication.

Thanks everyone for joining us for a record Criterium turn out and special thanks to Dragonfly Media for taking the photo's.  Please bring a friend to the next Waggrakine circuit event on Sunday 10th February.

Waggrakine Partner Time Trial

“Bring a Friend” Pairs Time Trial

Perfect riding conditions greeted 32 riders who turned up to welcome in the start of the 2013 Spokes Cycle Club season.  There were 14 new riders who powered their way around the two lap 17.3km circuit in Waggrakine.  Most former riders brought along a partner to have a go at the ride.  The focus was on getting on your bike, having a go and seeing just how well you could ride.  Most riders were pleasantly surprised by their performance.  Kelly and Andre Eastough, Vicky Sheilds and Ros Ewings, Julie Wilton and Lara Brownly, Marissa Drummond with Reggie Richardson all made great time as the new riders were well supported by their partners.

The ride saw some “old timers” Tony Slater and Paul Wilson back on the road.  Paul Hearne made quick work of the circuit finishing in 28.04 minutes at 37.4kph.  Jon Tamm and Paul Matthews were 40 seconds behind at 36.5kph with Tim Glenister and new comer Hagan Keating 22 seconds behind them at 36kph.  Father and son rivalry was strong between Tim and Sam Glenister with Darryl pulling Sam around at 34.4kph. Mort Harslett and Max Nowrojee are a force to watch finishing at 35.7 kph.  Alex Godley was an excellent partner for Jonty Calder who took line honours on handicap.  Mark Hollander and Andrew Outhwaite pulled in several pairs over the circuit. Andrew Toovey led a trio with Paul Wilson and new comer Neal Robson making good time at 32.2kph.  Michael Reymond and Simon Fenby rode strongly at 31.4kph.  Julie Firth supported Adrian Carter and Jean Thompson and Rhonda Bradley made excellent time at 29.7kph.

There was a buzz at the finish line as riders checked their positions and either celebrated their performance or made fervent commitments to get on their bikes more often to improve their fitness.  The next time trial is on Sunday 10th Feb with everyone encouraged to bring their partner back again.  If you can think of anyone who might enjoy the challenge of this circuit get them on their bikes to join in the fun.
